Biography
Hayley Chi Hay Chiu (b. 2001) is a second-generation Chinese Canadian painter based in Toronto. She specializes in oil painting and has a BFA in Drawing and Painting from OCAD University (2023).
Hayley documents a journey of continuous becoming and the search for “home”, retelling her world with fables and fantasy. Her work is characterized by surreal depictions of the body and its environment, feelings of in-betweenness and desire, and imagery from her heritage that she was never fully part of. Combining realism with overtly overlaid images, she breaks any illusion that her paintings are direct representations of reality, but one that explores the mythologies we create to find charm in mundanity.
