Hayley Chiu (b. 2001) is a second-generation Chinese Canadian based in Markham, Ontario. Her current body of work exists as documentation of the world from her perspective and observations. It’s a combination of themes: boredom, memories, relationships with family, cultural motifs, and navigating identity and struggles of being a second-generation Chinese Canadian and its implications. She works with oil paints as a means to engrain and remember images that she finds special. Painting is a form of self-exploration for her, a process to find solutions to internal conflicts and understanding more about herself and her thoughts, as well as a method she uses to find meaning and charm in a mundane lifestyle.
